Mathematics is an on-going process in which one element builds on those previously learned.  Therefore, it is important that students master skills and are continuously exposed to elements of mathematics. My goals therefore are:

  • to introduce, reinforce and ensure competency of all skills

  • to use skills to foster critical thinking skills

  • reinforce problem solving strategies

  • apply knowledge to real world applications

I am confident that all students can succeed in math with hard work and dedication.

Materials Needed Daily:

Covered textbook

Binder

Pencils with erasers

Scientific Calculator (7A, 8OT, 8A)

Grading Policy:

My grading system is on a points accumulated system.  Grades are not weighted but are assigned a point value as follows:

Binder                                                                              100 points

The math binder is an essential part of class each day.  Everything we do in class (i.e. warm-ups, classwork, handouts) will be kept in a binder in the correct section.  Binders will be reviewed twice a trimester.  Grades will be based on neatness, organization, and completeness.  All work needs to be titled, dated, and in the correct location (see example binder sheet).

Homework                                                                      4 points each

Homework is essential in mathematics for mastery of material.  The more you practice, the better you become at it.  Therefore, homework will be given nightly with the exception of test days and Fridays (occasionally I might have to give an assignment).  Homework is checked for completeness and effort and students must show work.  I will not accept just answers.  Each homework is assigned 4 points.  If a student misses an assignment they may bring it in the following day for 2 points.  No assignments will be accepted after two days. The final grade will be the total number of points accumulated divided by the total number of possible points. Occasionally homework will be collected to ensure students are correcting their mistakes. Daily homework assignments will be posted on this website.

No Homework Passes are given out to students who complete 10 consecutive homeworks.  These passes can be turned in for a missed homework assignment or two extra points on a test or quiz.

Projects                                                                          100 points each

There will be a project given once a trimester that allows students to draw upon some of their mathematical skills.  Each project will be explained thoroughly including requirements, completion date and distribution of points.

Quizzes                                                                           40 points each

Quizzes will be given half-way through each chapter.  The intention of quizzes is to ensure students are keeping up with the material and developing competency in the current topics.  We will have a review before each quiz.

Tests                                                                               80 points each

Tests will be given at the end of each chapter.  There will be a minimum of two days notice for the chapter test.  The day before the test will be a review day.  At the end of the review the student will be given a study sheet to be completed at home to aid in studying.  The student may return the completed review sheet the day of the test for an extra 3 points added to that test grade.  No review sheets will be accepted after the test.

If the entire class earns a 95 or above average on a test there will be a class reward (i.e. food treat, listening to music, or 10 minutes of free time)

Differentiated Instructions assessment                        varied

Each student will be able to choose an assignment from a pre-determined list based on their learning preferences that will reinforce the skills learned during the chapter.

Classwork/Activity Labs                                                 varied (approx. 20-30 pts)

Sometimes during class we will be working on an activity that will be graded.  Students will know ahead of time that the assignment will be graded and what the expectations are.

Once again I am dedicated to helping you/your child succeed.  I will be available for extra help in the mornings from
8:00-8:20 am and during recess 12:00-12:25 (except Wednesdays and Thursdays).  I can also be available after school with advanced notice.

If there are ever any questions or concerns please call or e-mail me (I can get back to you faster if you e-mail).
