"I am always doing that which I can not do,
in order that I may learn how to do it."

Pablo Picasso
Spanish Cubist painter (1881 - 1973)

Art is very important to the development of elementary age children.  It offers training in manipulation, perceptual experience related to their environment, an outlet for feelings, and opportunities to expand awareness and imagination.

Art activities are designed to foster growth in media manipulation, vocabulary, identification and the use of elements and principles of design, understanding of other cultures, aesthetics, and history.

Classes:

bullet

Primary Division:  Experimenting with materials combined with observation of the world around them.

bullet

Middle Division:  Getting acquainted with the elements and principles of design, studying famous artists and their work as well as various cultures.

bullet

Upper Division: Becoming more polished in basic skills such as drawing and painting, learning more about craft versus fine art, and combining writing with art.

Curriculum Content:

Visuals, such as paintings, sculpture, crafts from other culture and story books.

Non-visuals, such as poems, feelings and experiences.

The types of materials and the subject matter are varied as much as possible to give every student an opportunity to grow, to discover their niche, their calling.

The Art Room should be a safe environment to express ideas and emotions.  Students must respect each other’s work and be supportive so that all may feel free to share and contribute.
