Welcome to our class!!

Click here for second grade homework

We are looking forward to an exciting 2006-2007 school year at Grey Nun Academy.  To that end, we have developed this webpage to help acquaint our students and parents with information that will be helpful now and throughout the year.

Our primary goal in second grade is to facilitate the social, spiritual and academic growth of each student.  We recognize every student as an individual and will strive to make his/her learning experience a unique one.  In forming a sense of community between parents and teachers, our classroom family will be a nurturing environment for each student to develop a life-long love of learning.

Curriculum Overview

Our literature based language arts program surrounds children with quality literature selections from our
Scott Foresman anthology series as well as trade books.  There is a strong focus on phonics that is bolstered by the
Orton-Gillingham approach.  Reading, writing, spelling, speaking and listening skills are taught through an integrated theme approach.   Children are expected to incorporate any new spelling and/or phonics skills into his or her writing.  This helps to bridge the gap between inventive and conventional spelling.    Children are highly encouraged to use inventive spelling when tackling difficult words.

Our second grade math curriculum emphasizes mastery of basic facts, the process of regrouping, problem solving, telling time, money and geometry.  Manipulatives are used to introduce, teach, and enrich these areas.  Emphasis is placed on how we can use math in our everyday lives.

Science highlights include animal groups, staying healthy, plant growth, and weather.  An inquiry based, hands on approach to science is stressed.  Students will learn by investigating and drawing conclusions formed through observations.  Social studies highlights are communities, rules/laws, individual wants/needs, people we depend on, families and ancestors, and map reading.

We are all Friends of Jesus!  Children continue to grow in their faith and learn about the Ten Commandments, several saints, the rosary and the sacraments, primarily Reconciliation and First Eucharist.  The children receive these two sacraments in the beautiful Sacred Heart Chapel located right on the school property.

Grading policy

Students will be graded on tests, projects, class work, homework and participation.  We will use the standard Grey Nun grading system.
