GREY NUN ACADEMY

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM

 2008 - 2009

(Miss Mary Beth McGinty, Mrs. Carol Ogborn)

Throughout the year we are committed to:

             1.  creating an atmosphere through which the students will regard the

classroom as a warm, inviting, friendly, fun, and interesting place to

                   learn.

            2.  meeting the social, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of the

students in an environment which encourages optimum intellectual

                 development.

            3.  encouraging students to wonder, to seek answers, to question, and

to be curious while exploring their environment.

            4.  fostering a sense of competence and worth in each child.

            5.   providing opportunities for children to learn and play effectively with

each other while valuing their own rights and the rights of others.

            6.   partnering with our parents for the well being of their child(ren).

 KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM

INTEGRATED LANGUAGE ARTS

Links to Reading First is a high-quality reading program that includes instructional content based on the five essential components of reading instruction. Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension are integrated into a coherent instruction design that focuses on instructional sequence, explicit instruction, and ample practice. Scott Foresman Reading provides a variety of multisensory materials to make learning active and rewarding for each child at his or her particular level. Your child will be exposed to a wide variety of mind engaging language and literacy experiences and activities.

 MATHEMATICS

Mathematics is designed to develop thinking skills, reasoning skills, and teach problem-solving strategies. It gives students creative power to use math in real life. Hands-on activities offer opportunities to explore position and sorting, graphing and patterns, measurement, time and money, geometry and fractions, addition and subtraction, and counting and number patterns to one hundred.

PHONICS

"The Land Of The Letter People" is a multimedia, multisensory program that helps children develop an understanding of the workings of both spoken and written language. The huggable letter people serve as motivators on the journey to becoming lifelong readers and learners.

RELIGION

We Believe is designed to help children develop positive attitudes about themselves, their families, and friends by discovering and learning more about the many gifts, talents, and abilities that God has provided.  Children experience God in everyday life through scripture, stories, songs, activities, conversation, and prayer.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Here We Go expands kindergartners’ knowledge of their own world and the world at large. Activities center on family and family stories, friends, communities, work, our Earth, and the U.S.A.

SCIENCE

Scott Foresman Science introduces the concept of scientific methods and facilitates learning about science by doing activities called experiments. A hands on approach will help students explore life science, earth science, physical science, and space and technology.
