8th Grade Science

"To pursue science is not to disparage the things of the spirit.  In fact, to pursue science rightly is to furnish the framework on which the spirit may rise."

Vannevar Bush, in a speech, October 5, 1953

Course Objective: Earth Science

The eighth grade course provides opportunities for students to make connections with natural phenomena to their everyday lives as they explore topics in earth science.  They investigate meteorology through both lab experiences and data gathering outdoors.

They explore geology by manipulating rock and mineral samples and making identifications using lab tests.  Astronomy is approached by discussing current theories and new discoveries.  Students expand their knowledge by exploring the web and preparing Power Point presentations for their classmates on selected topics in astronomy.

A study of hydrology is incorporated into land use issues which concern our local communities.  Students use real-life problems of suburban sprawl to create models which both illustrate how we have altered our environment and what should be done to make positive changes.

Oceanography is studied through a discussion of the importance of maintaining the diversity of species while balancing the opportunities for research.  Students gain an appreciation for how vast, but how fragile our oceans are.  Classroom study of these branches of earth science is enhanced by field trips and guest speakers.
