Course Objective: Earth Science

The sixth grade science course provides opportunities for students to work collaboratively in planning activities to solve a problem, such as in the design of a bridge which is entered into a competition for load-carrying capacity, to manipulate lab materials in conducting experiments, and to formulate questions about the variety of topics which are covered.

Students practice social skills in learning how to work effectively in planning and conducting investigations as a team. Their inquiries include how to use a topography map and a compass on a hike, how a watershed is impacted by the surrounding environment, predicting the weather, discovering what the issues are in exploring the ocean, using chemical and physical tests to identify rocks and minerals, among many others in the study of earth science .
