6th Grade Religion


Course Objective:

Our sixth grade religion program focuses on two primary objectives.  During the first trimester the textbook, Confirmed in the Spirit, Loyola Press, 2007, is used to support the instruction given at each student's parish in preparing for Confirmation. 

During the second and third trimesters our students study the Old Testament using the text This is Our Faith -6, Silver Burdett Ginn, 1998. 

During the first trimester specific goals include:

  • Gaining an understanding of the nature of adulthood and what role they may play in their parish community
     

  • Being able to list and describe the nature and role of the Fruits and Gifts of the Holy Spirit
     

  • Gaining an understanding of how and why the Holy Spirit relates to us (symbols used by the Church throughout the Church's history are studied)
     

  • Being able to name the Beatitudes and discuss the meaning of each
     

  • Gaining an understanding of what it means to be initiated in the Church
     

  • Being able to describe the Sacrament of Confirmation as it was celebrated throughout the history of the Church, to discuss the plight of the early Christians
     

  • Being able to discuss the nature of ministry in the Church, being able to list and give examples of the Corporal and the Spiritual Gifts of Mercy
     

  • Being able to explain why there are three types of sacraments
     

  • Being able to describe how the Holy Spirit is described in Scripture
     

  •  Being able to describe in detail the Celebration of Confirmation within the mass
     

  • Being able to list the Church's requirements for the selection of an appropriate sponsor
     

  • Selecting an appropriate Confirmation name
     

  • Researching their patron saint or the saint chosen as their confirmation name

               

During the remainder of the year students will:

  • Become familiar with the parts of the bible, will be able to look up a bible verse, will gain an understanding of how the Bible tells us about God and how He wants us to live.
     

  • Study the creation stories
     

  • Discuss the consequences of evil in our world in contrast to how God works through us to do good
     

  • Gain an understanding of God's covenant with Abraham and his descendents
     

  • Discuss the story of Joseph and how it relates to divine providence
     

  • Discuss the story of Moses to gain an understanding of how God helps us through our struggles
     

  • Study the Ten Commandments as our covenant with God
     

  • Discuss the story of Joshua and how our promised land is where there is justice, peace, and love
     

  • Gain an insight into the gifts and talents God has given us using the example of the story of David
     

  • Study the bible accounts of individuals who helped to lead the Hebrews
