6th Grade On Target Math

Class Policies:

Student evaluation will be based on several criteria.  Point values are assigned to every method of assessment.  A grade sheet is usually sent home within a week of interims and with the final grade for the trimester.  This grade sheet indicates the percentage of points earned of the total possible.  Students are

encouraged to keep a record of their progress.  Students are given opportunities to complete extra credit assignments.  Effort shown in completing extra credit may help in making up for points lost in any area of assessment.

Daily Homework – To encourage good study skills, homework for the entire week is announced at the beginning of the week.  Students may plan ahead to prepare for quizzes and tests.  Homework is essential practice for reinforcing skills.  Assignments are evaluated each class period for effort.  Students then check their own  work as each problem is reviewed.  Points assigned for homework contribute approximately 15% of the total points for the marking period.

Binder – Students organize their work in a 3-ring binder using dividers to separate notes on each lesson covered, homework, problem solving, and special assignments.  Binders are checked twice each trimester for a complete record of notes, in addition to organization.  Binders contribute about 10 – 12% of the total points.

Problem Solving, Special Assignments, and Classwork – Students work both individually and cooperatively on several problem solving activities over the course of the marking period.  Special projects are also assigned for group work.  These assessments contribute about 10 – 15% of the total points.

Quizzes – One quiz and two "warm-ups" (unannounced "mini-quizzes") are given to assess student progress for each chapter covered.  Quizzes account for about 25% of the total possible points.

Tests – A test is given at the completion and review of a chapter.  A test will be announced at least a week ahead of time and a full class period review precedes a test.  Tests account for about 35% of the total points possible for the marking period.  A mid-term exam is given during January and a final at the end of the year.
