THE LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER PROGRAM
MISSION
The mission of the Grey Nun Academy Library Media Center is to enable all students to learn well by supporting the school's curriculum. The library media center will also encourage students' leisure reading.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Grey Nun Academy Library Media Center is to implement, support, and enrich the educational program of the school. The collection, including print and non-print materials, is selected and maintained with this purpose in mind.
GOALS
Using a modified flexible schedule Grades PreK -- 5 will use regular scheduled weekly class library periods to learn about the organization of materials and procedures to locate materials both books and electronic. Grades 6 - 8 will attend scheduled classes for one trimester of the school year. Teachers of all grades may schedule additional library time for research in any subject area.
The Library Media Center Program is twofold. First, it is designed to be instructional -- to teach the information literacy skills that are necessary to find and use information. Second, it is designed to be enriching -- to stimulate learning and reading through library related activities. Fifth grade students are encourage to participate in the Bucks County Reading Olympics. The skills portion of the program is summarized as follows:
Primary Division: Care, location, use, and circulation of print and non-print materials; alphabetical arrangement of books in the easy-to-read section; fiction and nonfiction; simple call numbers; parts of a book. Middle Division: Care, location, use, and circulation of print and non-print materials; use of the computer card catalog; Dewey Decimal System; encyclopedias; almanacs; atlases; biographies; and Newbery Medal of Honor books.
Upper Division: All areas and collections of the library media center including; general and subject reference books; indexes; Internet searching, researching topics, writing reports and preparing bibliographies. Instruction in these areas is integrated into discipline areas.
Sixth grade students receive Internet instruction including; the history and terminology of the Internet, and search strategies.
Seventh grade students learn research techniques, and preparation of a bibliography while completing a term paper.
Eighth grade students complete a term paper on a topic of their own choice.
Weekly Class Schedule:
Monday: 1st Grade, and Kindergarten Tuesday: PreK, and 3rd Grade Wednesday: 5th Grade Thursday: 4th Grade Friday: 2nd Grade
Teachers can schedule library research time with their students when classes are not scheduled.
